PR and marketing wasn’t something I’d spent much time considering at the beginning of the year. As a passionate writer with an interest in all sides of the media but no idea of the area I wanted to work in, I was struggling to get my first foot on the career ladder. By a huge stroke of luck Emma Kirke, who I know personally, is a client of MacComms with her business Medicinal Kitchen. She told me about the work experience opportunities and with a little research I realised I may have found my niche.
My first day at MacComms was a little daunting, there was a lot of information to take in and it was clear that I was going to be kept very busy during my time working for Ellie. Busy yes but dull? Definitely not. The day flew by and I left feeling excited for the coming weeks and keen to learn more.
Since then I have begun helping out in different sides of the business, including: writing press releases, using Hootsuite for social media management and creating databases for clients. My writing background has helped but writing press releases is very different to what I usually do; it is interesting to find different ways to adapt my writing style to PR. Other elements of the work come less naturally to me, such as networking, I am looking forward to developing my skills and confidence in these areas. The work has been challenging but very rewarding, as a successful start-up business there is always something to be working on at MacComms.
It is exciting to be a part of MacComms which was established just seven months ago by Ellie MacDonald. In that time, the company has gone from strength to strength and has become an invaluable part of expanding the reach of other local businesses.
